Friedemann Buehler

For Friedemann Buehler, woodturning begins long before the lathe. In the forests of Hohenlohe, he seeks out felled oak and ash, splitting and shaping each trunk with an axe and chainsaw before carrying it back to his studio in Langenburg. There, time becomes an essential tool. Some vessels are turned over the course of years, allowing the wood to dry, shift, and reveal its true form. Working with a mix of traditional, antique, and self-made equipment, Buehler embraces these natural transformations, coaxing remarkably thin forms from solid timber. Rough, brushed, bleached, stained, or oiled, each piece possesses the presence of a sculpture, capturing a fleeting moment in the life of the tree from which it came.
