Niijima Glass

The natural olive-green hue that defines Niijima Glass is inseparable from its place of origin. A few hours south of Tokyo lies Niijima Island, a pristine volcanic landscape where koga stone—a rare volcanic rock found only here and on Italy’s Lipari Island—is quarried. When melted, the iron within the stone reacts naturally to create glass with a distinctive olive tint and softly clouded translucency. The result is believed to be the world’s only glass made purely from volcanic stone. Leading this extraordinary workshop are husband-and-wife team Osamu Noda and Yumiko Noda. A native of Niijima and internationally acclaimed glass artist, Osamu established the Niijima Glass Center in 1988, dedicated to transforming the island’s unique geological heritage into objects of enduring beauty.
