Named for the tiny village in the heart of France, Accolay pottery has a rich legacy. It’s here, as the 20th century entered its second half, that a group of ceramicists settled and began to create striking pieces of earthenware that soon drew legions of fans from all over the country and beyond. Although each brought a distinct aesthetic and skills, their collective work is defined by sculptural silhouettes, functionality—essential to customers during this chapter in time—an organic, almost unfinished earthiness, and vibrant colors. This 1950s pitcher-shaped vase is a more austere Accolay piece that makes simplicity its focus, detail arriving in the form of a coppery glint and lightly ribbed texture.
