Like many of the French pottery greats, Jean Gerbino made his name in the city of Vallauris, where he began his career working for the legendary Massier family. Later striking out on his own, he developed his distinctive technique, a style that combined mosaic and Japanese neriage, the latter involving laminating clay of different colors then cutting across the grain to create repeating patterns. This lidded pot showcases this patchwork look to great effect, while the smooth exterior offers a sheen that belies its advanced age.
